Verify the camera is on by looking at the readout on the top of the camera. If camera battery is fully depleted, the battery needs to be replaced. Refer to the Battery replacement guide for help replacing the battery. The problem may be the shutter. Before taking a picture, verify that the shutter is manually opened on the front of the camera.
