Introduction

The motherboard will have to come out first before the battery can be removed. A strong adhesive is used to glue in the battery and requires slow prying with adhesive remover.

What you need

Step 1

              Speaker Bezel
  • Insert an opening pick underneath the speaker bezel, and slide it along the perimeter to separate it from the tablet.
  • The adhesive is strong and may require an iOpener, or heat gun, to soften.

Step 2

  • Remove the speaker bezel.

              Rear Panel
  • Remove the six pink 3mm T3 Torx screws from the back case.

  • Wedge opening picks around the perimeter between the display and back case.
  • Work the opening picks around the perimeter until the two halves disengage from each other.
  • Don’t completely separate as the display ribbon cable still connects the two.

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the rear panel press-fit connector from the motherboard.

  • There may be a glue strip between the battery and the outside case. Gently pry the case open and use the flat end of a spudger to separate the glue strip.

  • Grab the yellow tape with a pair of tweezers and pull upwards to disconnect the press-fit connector.

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the front camera press-fit connector from the motherboard.

  • Remove the nine 3mm T6 Torx screws from the motherboard.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the antenna cable from the motherboard.
  • Pull the antenna cable up and off of the motherboard.
  • Don’t remove completely as it’s soldered to the frame.

  • Use a spudger to disconnect the second antenna cable from the motherboard.

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the front camera press-fit connector from the motherboard.
  • Remove the front camera.

  • Remove the motherboard from the tablet.

              Battery
  • Pry up the battery connector with the flat end of a spudger.

  • iFixit adhesive remover contains acetone, a mild skin and eye irritant.
  • Wear eye protection when handling and applying the adhesive remover. (Eye protection is included in your kit.)
  • Do not wear contact lenses without eye protection.
  • Protective gloves are also included in your kit. If you are concerned about possible skin irritation, put your gloves on now.

Step 16

  • Apply a small amount of adhesive remover (approximately 1 ml) evenly along the elevated edge of the battery cell.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes for the liquid adhesive remover to penetrate underneath the battery cell before you proceed to the next step.

Step 17

  • Slide a few opening picks between the battery and the raised metal edge.
  • Pry upwards to lift the battery up.
  • Step 15 may need to be repeated a few times to weaken the glue.

Step 18

  • Apply a small amount of adhesive remover (approximately 1 ml) underneath the battery and wait 2-3 minutes for it to penetrate.
  • You may need to repeat this a few times.
  • Continue prying up the battery.

  • Remove the battery from the mid-frame.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

These instructions look great, but I can’t get those six pink 3mm T3 Torx screws from the back case off. In fact, I believe I’ve stripped them pretty badly. Any ideas? Super glue my screwdriver to them?

Thanks for the instructions but there’s one important step that you missed for anyone trying this. I followed the instructions exactly but was left with a blank screen at the end of the reassembly. The reason for this is that when you remove the motherboard in step 12 (having removed the connectors from the top of the board), the action of removal also disconnects the display and digitiser connectors which reside beneath the board.

This isn’t explicitly mentioned in the instructions but if you look to the right of the images for step 12, beneath the right hand corner of the board is a small black connector on a copper coloured square and a little further back from this (obscured by the board in the picture) is another larger connector. Both of these MUST be reconnected when replacing the board and before continuing the other reassembly steps otherwise your screen will simply not function

All the tools you need are there. I did buy the T3 Torx screwdriver. It was too big for the pink screws. The one in the above kit worked. I also bought the ifix adhesive remover kit.

It took me 4 hours over 2 days to get the back off the kindle. I almost separated the screen from the electronics. Have not attempted to put everything back together yet, however, Greg Ferry, I did notice the very thing you mentioned. And I have 2 unrelated questions.

  1. Do I need glue to reassemble this? Can I just use crazy glue?

  2. My volume buttons weren’t working. Is there some electronic contact that needs to be made? I wonder if the fact that the old battery was expanding (which is why I’m replacing it) had anything to do with that.

Re: volume buttons, all of the back panel buttons (power, volume) and the USB port are run through the first cable that’s disconnected in step 5. If you are still having issues with volume once it’s been reconnected, perhaps check the alignment on the connector and make sure it’s fully seated. I’d also suggest not clipping the screen fully back in until you’ve tested everything; that way you don’t risk cracking the screen with repeated removals.

My battery too was bulging but once I replaced it, the device went back to it’s original flat profile so it doesn’t seem to have caused any long term damage.

Thanks Gary. I’m just getting ready to try and put it back together. I’m guessing I should try to charge the battery before I close it up.
