What you need

Step 1

              Getting Inside the Thinkpad               
  • Using both latches on the left and right side of the Thinkpad, lift up the screen.
  • Again using both latches, push them back while pushing the keyboard up till it pops up, then lift the keyboard up. You may need to use a little force.

Step 2

              Removing the Battery               
  • Lift the battery using it’s cloth pull tab and lift it out of the ThinkPad. Set it aside.

              Removing Screws/Lifting Cover               
  • Remove the following screws, there should be 3. Two of the screw spots may be slightly different on yours.
  • The cover has adhesive on it at these spots, pull it slowly till the adhesive releases. Then lift the cover up, you may need to hold it.
  • Keep track of the screws, the one that holds the drive to the board and cover is small, so don’t loose it!

Remove the following screws, there should be 3. Two of the screw spots may be slightly different on yours.

Step 4

              Removing the Hard Drive               
  • Using the top pull, pull the hard drive downwards till it detaches from the connector.
  • Alternately, if the drive will not pull out, you may push down on it from the right side next to the connector till it detaches.
  • Next, use the pull on the right side, pull it to the right lightly while lifting the drive.

Step 5

              Replacing the Hard Drive               
  • Remove the 4 screws holding the hard drive in it’s caddy. (2 each side)
  • Put the drive face up and slide it down out of the caddy.
  • If the hard drive will not slide out of the caddy, you may need to disassemble it. The caddy is made of two parts, face the caddy upside down with the top pull facing up and slide the reflective metal piece up, then pull it off.
  • Due to BIOS limitations, the ThinkPad only supports a drive size up to 8.4 GB, it will not notice the drive if it exceeds this limit.

Remove the 4 screws holding the hard drive in it’s caddy. (2 each side)

Put the drive face up and slide it down out of the caddy.

If the hard drive will not slide out of the caddy, you may need to disassemble it. The caddy is made of two parts, face the caddy upside down with the top pull facing up and slide the reflective metal piece up, then pull it off.

Due to BIOS limitations, the ThinkPad only supports a drive size up to 8.4 GB, it will not notice the drive if it exceeds this limit.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
