Introduction

For this guide, you will need Phillips #1 Screwdriver heads and a plastic opening tool to find your way towards the RAM. Make sure to very careful with cable wires along the way so you do not break other parts of the computer by mistake.

What you need

Step 1

              Keyboard Panel               
  • Flip the laptop over so that the bottom of the laptop is facing up.

  • Remove five 1.4mm Phillips #1 screws from the bottom of the laptop.

  • Remove the rubber grip using a plastic opening tool.
  • Remove five 1.7mm Phillips #1 screws.

Step 4

  • Lift open the laptop screen and flip it around so that the keyboard is facing up.
  • Insert a plastic opening tool into one of the corners to create a gap between the bottom panel and the keyboard panel.
  • Guide the plastic opening tool around the perimeter of the panel to detach all the clips that are supporting it in place.
  • Do not pull the panel off by one corner as it can cause damage to the plastic.
  • Detach the keyboard panel from the frame.
  • There are two ribbon cables attached to the keyboard and trackpad so do not pull the keyboard panel away until you disconnect these ribbons in the next step.

Lift open the laptop screen and flip it around so that the keyboard is facing up.

Guide the plastic opening tool around the perimeter of the panel to detach all the clips that are supporting it in place.

Do not pull the panel off by one corner as it can cause damage to the plastic.

There are two ribbon cables attached to the keyboard and trackpad so do not pull the keyboard panel away until you disconnect these ribbons in the next step.

Step 5

  • Remove the two ribbon cables connected to the inside of the laptop by using a finger to lift up on the latches.
  • Remove the keyboard panel from the rest of the laptop.

Step 6

              Motherboard               
  • The component that you MUST disconnect first is the battery to prevent any power that might be stored in the the computer even if it is shutdown.
  • Use a plastic opening tool to lift the battery cable out from the motherboard.
  • Disconnect the seven ribbon cables connected to the motherboard using a finger or plastic opening tool.
  • You can work from left to right from the battery to ensure no cables are missed.

Step 7

  • Remove the ten 1.2mm Phillips #1 screws that hold the motherboard into the frame of the laptop.

  • Remove the motherboard by lifting it up and pulling it out.
  • DO NOT force it out if the motherboard appears to be stuck. Track back and see what is preventing the motherboard from being removed (i.e. cable or screw) to prevent any damage to other components.

Step 9

              RAM               
  • Use an iFixit opening tool to snap the silver the case off of the motherboard.

  • Push down on the metal locks on each side of the RAM to pop the sticks out.
  • Make sure to move the metal locks aside before you push the RAM back in place.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
